Sometimes my DScaler doesn't work, showing me a window with this message:
Can't create overlay surface: 88760168
The solution i've found (no restart) is change display resolution. Notice that you can return to the previous resolution if you want.

Changing the screen resolution appears to work.
Providing I haven't tried to run the program already.
1280*1024 is the resolution I was running, it doesn't create the overlay at this. Using 800*600 the program runs but only if I haven't tried to use it at another resolution first.
Thanks for your help Jordimra. |

hi
when i start dscaler, lots of funny pixels appear on my background image. they disappear when closing dscaler. ist this normal? i think it might be the overlay color value or something like that. but since dscaler uses the overlay, it should not change anything on the primary surface, right? |

I want to get Dscaler running from an MCE 2005 shortcut (makes it more wife friendly). I get an overlay error when trying this but it certainly runs both if MCE is minimised. Whilst it does minimise MCE when running Dscaler it seems to be too quick and I therefore get the overlay error.
Is there anything I can add to the Dscaler program shortcut in the 'target' or 'start in' lines that will slow down the opening of Dscaler?
I appreciate it's (hopefully) a really dumb questions and an easy answer!
Graphics card is a Nvidia 6200 256MB, CPU is a 2800+ AMD so there shouldn't be any hardware issues. I also run Nvidias PureVideo codec.
Thanks,
Bryan |

I just upgraded my new system from the onboard Intel graphics to an NVidia 7900GT with 84.21 drivers and am now seeing an error "Your video card doesn't appear to support overlays, which DScaler requires." when I try to run DScaler. I only have one monitor hooked up through DVI with the drivers in single-display mode, any thoughts? Other media players seem to have no problem.
Could this have anything to do with having installed the WDM drivers for the cards VIVO features? I have a Leadtek Winfast 2000 Expert as well that I never installed the drivers for but use Dscalers built in support for, and now Media Player Classic works with the WDM Nvidia drivers for its S-Video in but of course can't see the Leadtek - I had never been impressed with their drivers so since Dscaler supports it natively didn't install them.
My plan down the line is to get rid of the Leadtek and get an MPEG2 encoding card for Windows Media Center and using the video in on the 7900GT for video games since the MPEG2 cards I've seen have lag that wouldn't work for games, but first I need to get DScaler to at least start up so I can try and configure it for the Nvidia S-Video in. |

Most media players work fine without an overlay but Dscaler can only use the overlay.
The overlay is already used by another program or an overlay is not supported by your system. I guess it is the latter, maybe reinstalling the drivers of the video card or DirectX fixes the problem.
Your system should ofcourse be able to support an overlay.

No.

Note that the DShow drivers I have seen are quite bad compared to the DScaler built-in driver. Image quality is worse and they are much and much slower, sometimes there is a noticeable delay between image and sound. |

Yeah, after forcing other software into overlay mode they give me the same error, it seems to be a bug in the drivers. And it doesn't look like any of NVIDIA's older drivers support the 7900 series, so I look to be out of luck until they fix it. Oh well. I guess this comes with being an early adopter - this is the first time I've ever bought any hardware pretty much at launch, heh.

In your experience is it usually delayed video or delayed audio or does it vary from system to system? For this I'd be running the audio directly to my sound card so it shouldn't be delayed at all so I would just need the video to be real-time.
Thanks for the help. |

I have this exact same problem Nvidia 7900GT VIVO (XFX Extreem model) 91.31 drivers, wont bring up the overlay. Strange that nvidia have not corrected this problem yet?
EDIT: Just found the problem! If you drop your clock speeds using coolbits to about 450 / 600 (just a guessed figure) Then it sudenly can create the overlay and everything is fine. I guess the overclocking it too extreem on some of these factory-oced cards, i WILL be on the phone to XFX tommorow... |

I just want to add that I also have an XFX 7900GT (edit: upon further inspection, I think I do actually have the extreme eddition) with this exact same problem, and underclocking it to what you suggested fixed for me, as well. Mine was stock clocked to 520/750, just for reference. I'd be very interested in what XFX has to tell you.
Have you noticed other issues with overlayed video playback? I have had some problem playing videos (not all, it seems mostly limited to divx/xvid stuff) in just about any video player outside of VLC, where I would get very choppy FPS and lots of dropped frames. this underclock didnt seem to affect that, but it is still very strange none the less. |

Same issue here, Galaxy 7900GS
Clocked out of the stock to 540/750, overlay unavailable and tearing when watching in videos in VMR mode.
To enable overlay and stop tearing in VMR mode, it's not needed to slow down the memory clock, just change the frequency a bit (say 2 mhz less or even more - 748,752) will do the trick.
That's very strange and latest nvidia driver sill have that issue, what a shame. |

This is my error and this is why dscaler isnt working for me and hasn't worked since I instaled it. But how do I change the display resolution? My dscaler is version 4.1.15. |
